SUMMARY:Online Event: Seafood as a Strategic Source of Food in the Context of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Monday 13 December 2021, 15:00 – 17:00 CET\n \nOnline Event with interpretation ES<>EN\n \n \nHosted by MEP Gabriel Mato (EPP, ES)\n \n CLICK HERE TO REGISTER\n \nClimate change has been revolutionizing our food systems. Consumers and producers alike are increasingly looking at options to make our diets sustainable under an ever-changing climate. Within this context, low-carbon animal proteins can play a role, but how can fisheries management innovate and refocus towards a more ecological objective of using, sustainably, marine resources instead of focusing on individual species? What are the preconditions for fisheries to contribute to new dietary patterns under changing climatic conditions? This event, organized under the umbrella of the European Parliament Intergroup on ‘Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’, will try to answer these questions informing new directions for effectively-managed, resilient and sustainable fisheries. In this context, seafood represents a more climate-friendly source of animal protein than most land-based sources and this should be underlined when addressing the management of marine resources.\nFinal Agenda:\n \n15:00 – 15:05               Welcome remarks: MEP Gabriel Mato (EPP, ES)\n15:05 – 15:10               Intervention by MEP Millán Mon (EPP, ES)\n15:10 – 15:20               Opening remarks: Rosa Quintana Carballo, Conselleira do Mar, Xunta de Galicia\n15:20 – 16:20               Interventions by:\n\nClimate Change Impacts on Aquatic Foods in the Context of Global Food Security Needs – Food and Agriculture Organization – Manuel Barange\n\n\nFisheries Management in the Context of Climate Change; European focus – International Council for the Exploration of the Sea – Mark Dickey Collas\n\n \n\nStudy Case with the Carbon Footprint of Different Sources of Protein – University of Washington – Ray Hilborn\n\n \n\nSingle-Stock Management Versus the Notion of Multi-species – National Institute of Aquatic Resources – Anna Rindorf\n\n\nCarbon footprint on fisheries and the Atlantic diet – University of Santiago de Compostela – Gumersindo Feijoo\n\n\nWillow Battista, Senior Manager on Climate Resilient Food Systems, Environmental Defense Fund\n\n16:20 – 16:30               Reaction from Lorella de la Cruz Iglesias, Deputy Head of Unit A2 on Blue Economy Sectors, Aquaculture and Maritime Spatial Planning, DG MARE, European Commission\n16:30 – 16:55               Q&A discussion with the audience, moderated by Ernesto Penas Lado, Member, IUCN/CEM/FEG\n16:55 – 17:00               Closing remarks: Ernesto Penas Lado, Member, IUCN/CEM/FEG\n \n \nVenue\nWebex\nDocuments of the meeting\nFinal Agenda – Seafood as a Strategic Source of Food in the Context of Climate Change ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Final-Agenda-Seafood-as-a-Strategic-Source-of-Food-in-the-Context-of-Climate-Change-2.pdf )\nWebinar Recordings: English and Spanish versions ( https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/11g4GmsL8cGV7GxfAfSobZCodXkfICDOn?usp=sharing )\nWebinar Report – Seafood as a Strategic Source of Food in the Context of Climate Change ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Webinar-Report-Seafood-as-a-Strategic-Source-of-Food.pdf )\nManuel Barange – Food and Agriculture Organization – PDF Presentation ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Manuel-Barange-Food-and-Agriculture-Organization-PDF-Presentation.pdf )\nMark Dickey Collas – International Council for the Exploration of the Sea – PDF Presentation ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Mark-Dickey-Collas-International-Council-for-the-Exploration-of-the-Sea-–-PDF-Presentation-1.pdf )\nRay Hilborn – University of Washington – PDF Presentation ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Ray-Hilborn-University-of-Washington-PDF-Presentation.pdf )\nAnna Rindorf – National Institute of Aquatic Resources – PDF Presentation ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Anna-Rindorf-National-Institute-of-Aquatic-Resources-PDF-Presentation.pdf )\nGumersindo Feijoo – University of Santiago de Compostela – PDF Presentation ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Gumersindo-Feijoo-University-of-Santiago-de-Compostela-PDF-Presentation.pdf )\nWillow Battista – Environmental Defense Fund – PDF Presentation ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Willow-Battista-Environmental-Defense-Fund-PDF-Presentation.pdf )\n
