SUMMARY:Online Event: Revision of the Waste Shipment Regulation – Turning challenges into opportunities to boost the circular economy
DESCRIPTION:Monday 20 June 2022, 17:30 – 18:30 CEST\n \nOnline event hosted by MEP Pernille Weiss\n \nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER ( https://ebcd.webex.com/ebcd/onstage/g.php?MTID=e951a580ed8de7432258fedd41a8bcba5 )\n \nThe European Commission’s Proposal for a Waste Shipment Regulation published in November 2021 aims at achieving three main goals: “ensuring that the EU does not export its waste challenges to third countries; making it easier to transport waste for recycling and reuse in the EU; and better tackling illegal waste shipments”.\nA number of ambitious and much needed proposed requirements, such as moving to digital waste shipment procedures, will support some of these objectives. Yet, when it comes to restricting waste exports, the absence of distinction among waste streams or between unprocessed waste and high-quality raw materials from recycling poses a real challenge to the European recycling industry, in particular for streams where their supply structurally exceeds the demand, in a market which is intrinsically global. This is the case for the steel scrap alongside with other base metals as well as for recovered paper. A more granular approach is required to ensure that problematic waste streams are not exported without hindering free and fair trade of circular materials within the EU and beyond.\nIndeed, access to international markets for the recycling industry remains of paramount importance to accelerate the transition towards a more circular and climate economy, which is an absolute must from an environmental and economic standpoint. Therefore, this upcoming webinar of the European Parliament Intergroup on ‘Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’, co-organized with EuRIC and hosted by MEP Pernille Weiss, Rapporteur for the Waste Shipment Regulation file at the ENVI Committee of the European Parliament, will provide the floor to NGOs, industry and policy-makers towards understanding the different viewpoints and finding common understanding in the interest of environmental protection, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and circular economy.\nFINAL AGENDA:\nModeration: Kira Taylor, Energy and Environment Reporter, EURACTIV\n17:30 – 17:35:                  Opening remarks by MEP Pernille Weiss, Rapporteur of the Waste Shipment Regulation\n17:35 – 17:55:                 Interventions by speakers (5’ per speaker):\n\nMattia Pellegrini, Head of B3 Unit “From Waste To Resources”, DG ENV, European Commission\nEmmanuel Katrakis, Secretary General, EuRIC\nLauren Weir, Ocean Campaigner, Environmental Investigation Agency\nUlrich Leberle, Raw Materials Director, Cepi\n\n17:55 – 18:05:                 Reactions by MEPs (5’ per speaker):\n\nMEP Sara Matthieu, Shadow Rapporteur of the Waste Shipment Regulation\nMEP Malte Gallée\n\n18:05 – 18:25:                 Q&A session with the audience\n18:25 – 18:30:                 Closing remarks by MEP Pernille Weiss, Rapporteur for the Waste Shipment Regulation\n \n \nVenue\nWebex\nDocuments of the meeting\nFinal Agenda – ‘Revision of the Waste Shipment Regulation; Turning challenges into opportunities to boost the circular economy’ ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Final-Agenda-Revision-of-the-Waste-Shipment-Regulation-Turning-challenges-into-opportunities-to-boost-the-circular-economy-1.pdf )\nWebinar Recording ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6ayJzt5Wnk )\nWebinar Report – Waste Shipment Regulation ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Webinar-Report-Waste-Shipment-Regulation.pdf )\nRegistration Report ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Registration-Report-6.pdf )\nEuRIC – Emmanuel Katrakis – PDF Presentation ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/EuRIC-Emmanuel-Katrakis-PDF-Presentation.pdf )\nCepi – Ulrich Leberle – PDF Presentation ( https://ebcd.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Cepi-Ulrich-Leberle-PDF-Presentation.pdf )\n
