Chair of the Bioeconomy Working Group of the European Parliament Intergroup on ‘Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’
The bioeconomy has a great potential to contribute to tackling environmental and societal challenges, such as resource efficiency and climate change, whilst maintaining European industrial competitiveness and contributing to job creation. It has also a key role at strengthening the strategic autonomy and resilience of the European industry. Following the release of the European Commission’s progress report on the evolution of the EU Bioeconomy Strategy (2022 – to be confirmed), this event will serve as a policy discussion platform for different stakeholders to explore the role and the achievements of the bioeconomy and the ways in which its policy framework can be improved in the context of the EU Green Deal.
As a result, this event organized under the umbrella of the European Parliament Intergroup on ‘Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’ in collaboration with the European Confederation representing the pulp and paper industries (Cepi), aims at highlighting the solutions the forest-based industries are delivering to mitigate the effects of climate change, for instance by providing renewable and recyclable low-carbon alternatives to fossil-based materials. Underlining the need for a European bioeconomy strategy that would entwine with the industrial policy, the event aims at providing a platform for debate on the state of play regarding bioeconomy at European level, as well as on the next steps needed to ensure that the EU Bioeconomy strategy contributes to the long-term solution of climate and environmental concerns, while supporting competitiveness, jobs and growth.
