The 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) is about to start in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt (6-18 November), and the outcomes of the discussions will be decisive for the future of aquatic food systems. Indeed, while the fisheries and aquaculture sectors are already impacted by the consequences of climate change, they also have the potential to contribute to climate solutions by identifying and adopting a number of mitigation and adaptation options.
To make sure that all these topics stay high on the agenda, EBCD has been engaging in the UNFCCC process, informing negotiators on the integration of aquatic food systems in climate workplans and mandates. To continue strengthening the ocean-climate nexus, EBCD is organizing the following events:
- 14/11 – 16.00-17.30 – Online: “Towards net-zero in the aquatic food sector: decarbonization pathways for climate-neutral diets”, co-organised with FAO.

As the fisheries and aquaculture sector will have to contribute to the Paris Agreement and Agenda 2030 goals, this event aims at initiating a conversation between institutions, the fisheries and aquaculture sector, technology providers and civil society to pave the way for potential decarbonization pathways in blue food production and distribution. The state of play of low-carbon fishing technologies as well as the challenges and opportunities to scale up these technologies for a transition within the sector will therefore be discussed. - 15/11 – 16.45-18.15 – Sharm El Sheik International Convention Centre, Room Memphis (Room 5): “Ocean-Climate-Society: challenges & opportunities for ocean mitigation, adaptation, finance & UNFCCC”, an event co-organised with the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the Blue Marine Foundation, Rare and the University of Strathclyde.

This event will explore the adaptation and mitigation solution offered by the oceans, notably through examples on blue finance and collaboration in Africa and Asia-Pacific. The importance of the inclusion of ocean topics in the UNFCCC discussions will also be promoted. - 17/11 – 09.30-10.30 – European Parliament, Room ASP 5G1 & online: “Oceans in climate negotiations: What role for blue foods?”, organised by the Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development.

While the awareness on the important role of the oceans in climate mitigation and adaptation is growing, blue foods are still too often being left out of the UN climate talks. Yet, they are already heavily impacted by the climate and biodiversity crises, while representing a huge potential to provide essential nutrients to a growing population. This event will shed light on what blue foods can do for the climate, and try to provide elements to climate negotiators and other stakeholders attending COP27 with relevant information on fisheries and aquaculture in the context of climate change.
