FEG's Report on ABMT's now Published with Cambridge Scholars Publishing
With the progression of the ecosystem approach in fisheries and of marine spatial planning for ocean development, the promotion of area-based management instruments is increasing and all sectors need to increase their awareness of the implications. The IUCN-CEM Fisheries Expert Group, in collaboration with external experts, developed a comprehensive review of Area-Based Management Tools (ABMTs) used in fisheries or affecting their socio-economic and ecological performance. The prologue provides a multidimensional perspective on the ocean space since antiquity.
The different chapters recall ABMTs’ definitions, roles, goals and objectives; human dimensions; typologies; governance; tensions, synergies and complementarities; trade-offs; effectiveness with factors affecting it and pathways to improve it. The role of UNCLOS, and global policy frameworks is reviewed. The perspectives offered are illustrated by a few case studies, including an industry view.
