Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures are increasingly recognized as an essential tool to improve effective fisheries management and strengthen the operationalization of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries.
At the Fifteenth round of informal consultations of States Parties to the United Nations Fish Stock Agreement (UNFSA), this was the key message delivered by Serge Garcia, Chair of the IUCN Fisheries Expert Group, on behalf of IUCN.
His presentation, “Civil society perspective on opportunities and challenges for
strengthening the implementation of an ecosystems approach to fisheries management”, also highlighted how OECMs can enhance the contribution of fisheries management to conservation.
