The current CBD broad vision of “Living in harmony with nature” where “By 2050, biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored and wisely used, maintaining ecosystem services, sustaining a healthy planet and delivering benefits essential for all people” captures the core challenges of fisheries managers to maintain sustainable fisheries, stop overfishing, and avoid or reduce collateral impact of fishing on biodiversity.
A short brief prepared by the Fisheries Expert Group of the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management addresses (1) the expected role of fisheries in the GBF; (2) the status and trends of fisheries and the biodiversity they impact; (3) examples of positive approaches to fisheries management and their outcomes; and (4) key gaps, challenges and needs for future work.
